Health Careers

The term “Health Career” is used to describe a large cluster of health-related personnel who fulfill important and needed roles in the health care system, including assisting, facilitating and complementing the work of physicians and other health care providers. Many of these health care professions were developed in the last 20-25 years in response to the rapid advancements in health care technologies.

Admissions

  • All applicants who wish to be admitted to MCC must complete and submit an official application to the college, pay a one-time, non-refundable $20 Connecticut Community College application fee and include an official copy of their high school diploma or GED certificate. Students with a Banner ID from another CT Community College should complete the MCC application but should not send any payment. Applicants should choose General Studies-Allied Health Services code (BB21). Admission to a specific Allied Health program requires a separate application. Applicants must submit the Health Careers Program Application. Only the Health Career Coordinators will place students into the specific Health Career programs after application and admission to that program.
  • It is recommended that an applicant who plans to enroll in a college program of study have four years of high school English, two years of high school mathematics, and one laboratory science course. However, an applicant may fulfill these requirements as a student at MCC before application to an allied health program. A student whose application has been accepted by the college may request at any time during the admission process a conference with a counselor in our Counseling Center.
  • Students wishing to transfer course work completed at another college or university, or by CLEP or other standardized examination, must complete the application form as directed and request that an official transcript of previous college work be sent to the Admissions Office at MCC. Please be sure to request that your social security number and any previous names be put on your transcript by the sending institution. Please allow three weeks for this information to reach us.
  • If your birth date is after December 31, 1956, you will need to comply with the state law proving that you have been immunized against measles and rubella. A form explaining the state regulation is available from Admissions.
  • English and math assessment tests are required for all degree and certificate candidates after they have been accepted for admission. Transfer students having mathematics and english credits will be excused from taking assessment tests in those subjects. Those whose english or math assessment test results indicate any serious deficiencies will be required to take one or more developmental courses to improve their capability for success in college level work. The results of the assessment tests will be used to determine the individual’s level of achievement in math or english so students can be placed in the appropriate classes. NOTE: Admission to the college does not guarantee admission to a specific health career program.
  • Once you have completed all of the above, you may register for any non-professional classes in the curriculum provided you have met the prerequisites for those courses. Registration is organized through the Admissions and Registrar’s Office which will notify students of their date and time for registration.
