Surgical Technology Program Policies
- Criteria for Admission to the Surgical Technology Program
To be considered for admission to the ST Program a student must show achievement of the following: - At least one course in laboratory biology at the college level within the previous five years with a grade of "C-" or better. This must be a pre-requisite for Anatomy and Physiology (BIO 211).
- One of the following:
- Completion of the college assessment test with placement into Math 138 or higher. Completion of Math 095 (Basic Algebra) with a grade of C or better.
- Eligibility for Eng 111
- Admission to the Surgical Technology Program
- A maximum of 24 students will be accepted for each Fall class.
- Students must apply to the college and complete a Health Careers application as detailed in the Health Career Programs Student Application and Admissions Procedures.
- All application materials and transcripts should be received in the Admissions Office before application review can be processed. Assessment tests should be taken as soon as possible after applying .
- Applicants who meet the Criteria listed in A above will be interviewed as part of the admission process.
- Program Acceptance and Procedures
- Students will be informed of the status of their admission application after the process is complete.
- All new Surgical Technology students will meet with the Program Coordinator for a scheduled orientation meeting prior to the beginning of classes.
- Students who have taken required science courses five or more years prior to the date of application will be required to retake these courses.
- Each semester, each Surgical Technology student will meet with the Program Coordinator for advisement prior to registration . The Program Coordinator must sign the registration form for a student to take Surgical Technology courses.
- If a student achieves less than a "C" in one required science course, the student will be placed on probation and will be notified of this in writing. The student will have one year to successfully repeat this course.
- If a student achieves less than a "C" in two or more science courses or one Surgical Technology course or has a GPA less than 2.0, the student will be dismissed from the program. If such a student wishes to be reinstated, he/she must wait a year and discuss this matter with the Surgical Technology Coordinator.
- Students must complete Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Microbiology and Chemistry 110 before being allowed to begin Clinical II.
- Students are required to meet the standards of the required physical examination and drug screening of the affiliated hospitals where they will do their clinical training.
- Students are responsible for their own books, transportation, parking, food and uniforms while in the program.

Financial Assistance

The employment outlook for surgical technologists is excellent. Graduates have gained employment in hospital operating rooms, delivery rooms, emergency rooms, outpatient clinics and surgeons offices. After further study many CSTs have become Certified First Assistants or instructors. Current annual entry-level salaries in central Connecticut hospitals range from about $29,000 to $35,000.Sample Clinical/Class Schedule (subject to change)
