Online Learning

Our distance education program at Manchester Community College offers an excellent opportunity for people in Connecticut and anyone with an Internet connection to stay knowledgeable and competitive in today's global environment. Because MCC recognizes the importance of flexibility in a person's day to day life, we offer online courses that provide flexibility in time and geographic location.

About Online and Hybrid Credit Courses

MCC provides students with fully online, hybrid, and computer-assisted courses that enable anytime, anywhere access to learning materials and enhance communication and community among faculty and students.

For a list of hybrid and online classes offered for the Spring 2008 semester, refer to pages 55-58 of the Fall 2008 Class Schedule.

Hybrid courses combine online work with regular on-campus class meetings. The Fall 2008 Class Schedule indicates where and when these on-campus meetings will be.

In most cases, you will do all of your learning in a fully online class via your computer. Some instructors, however, may ask that you come to campus for an orientation session or tests. Please contact your instructor for details. You can send an e-mail message to your instructor and check course schedules at the Online Self Service Student  Information page (Banner Web for Students) accessed through myCommNet

Online learning is provided through Blackboard Vista, an electronic environment that includes a grade book, discussion board, and electronic access to course materials that may range from simple text files and Web links to PowerPoint presentations, audio files, videos, and simulations.

Although MCC’s online courses provide flexibility that allow you to access information and participate in course discussions anytime and anywhere via a computer and an Internet connection, these are not self-paced courses. Just as in any MCC course, you will have weekly deadlines for assignments, discussions and assessments. The content and expectations in an online course are the same as in an on-campus course at MCC. In an on-campus course you talk to your instructor and fellow students and listen to their comments. In an online course these “conversations”take place in the discussion forums or via e-mail messages, increasing the amount of reading and writing you will do in addition to your normal coursework. Before enrolling in an online course consider the ways that you learn and communicate most easily.

On average, you can expect to spend the same number of hours working on your online course as you would on a campus course, without the time and expense of travel to and from class.

Enjoy your course!
