Mishi-maya-gat Spoken Word & Music SeriesLocation: Library Fireside Commons, LRC
The Spoken Word Open Mic begins at 5:45 p.m. Interested writers/readers may sign up at the door for a brief time slot. The Open Mic Feature, Lisa Taylor, received her M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Southern Maine's Stonecoast Program and has published three books of poetry, including Talking to Trees from Finishing Line Press. The live music set, beginning at 6:45 p.m., will feature Ken Cormier, singer, guitarist, poet, and composer, who has two CDs of original music, God Damn Doghouse (2000) and Radio-Bueno (2002), both from Elis Eil Records. Beginning at 7:45 p.m., the featured reading will spotlight two faculty poets from Assumption College in Worcester, MA: David Thoreen, M.F.A. from Bowling Green University and formerly the featured poet in the national literary journal, Diner; and John Hodgen, author of three books of poetry, including Grace (Associated Writing Programs 2006 award selection, University of Pittsburgh Press), In My Father’s House (winner of the 1993 Bluestem Award from Emporia State University in Kansas), and Bread Without Sorrow (2002, Lynx House Press). Life Without an Address-theater performanceLocation: SBM Charitable Foundation Auditorium, AST
Hartbeat Ensemble, a social action theater group will perform a staged reading of “Life Without an Address,” their original play about people who are homeless in Greater Hartford. Not only entertaining, the play also stirs in people the desire to create meaningful change in their own lives and the lives of others. The Manchester Initiative for Supportive Housing, Connecticut Coalition to End Homelessness, and other local groups will be there to share ongoing actions to end homelessness in our community. Admission is free. Suggested donations of canned goods are welcomed. This March and April Manchester Community College Library will participate in the nation-wide program called the Big Read. The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The NEA presents the Big Read in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest. Hartford Public has decided to host Dashiell Hammett’s the Maltese Falcon. MCC Library has twenty copies of this title for circulation.
Free screening of the film, The Maltese Falcon (1941), will be co-hosted by Professors Robert Kagan and Michael DiRaimo. Attendees are encouraged to dress as their favorite character from the film or characters from any “film noir”.

English instructor and resident mystery author Steven Torres will discuss The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett, how this book fits into the “hard-boiled” and “noir” subgenres of mystery, and Hammett’s philosophy of detective fiction as real-ism.
