MCC Experiences Record Fall Enrollment

Manchester, Conn., - (September 1, 2009)… The first week at Manchester Community College (MCC) saw record-breaking fall enrollment, with an all-time high of 7,338 students, as of August 31, an increase of ten percent compared to Fall 2008. “Most classes are filled and we’ve had to turn some students away, however, we’ve also made an effort to accommodate students,” stated Dr. Duncan Harris, acting dean of Student Affairs. “We added ten sections to the late start period in mid-September, and are offering more online sections than in the past.”

The surge in enrollment is primarily due to the increased numbers of traditional-age students who are choosing to start at a community college, the escalating cost of attending college, and the increase in unemployment resulting in adults returning to college to enhance their job skills or change careers.

The growth of student enrollment has impacted other areas of the college including the increase in financial aid requests and the number of adjunct faculty members teaching classes.

The MCC community is working to ensure new and returning students are receiving the information they need as they begin the fall semester. “We will persevere and continue to do everything we can to accommodate and provide an excellent educational experience for our deserving students,” said Gena Glickman, president of MCC.

Students of any age who possess the desire to pursue higher education are welcome at Manchester Community College. MCC is proud of its academic excellence, new facilities, flexible schedules, small classes, low tuition and faculty with both academic and “real world” credentials. The College offers over 60 programs, transfer options, financial aid and scholarships, as well as access to baccalaureate degrees through guaranteed admissions programs with several universities. MCC is situated on a park-like campus and is easily accessible from I-84.
