MCC Helps Prepare for Fishing Season with Connecticut Basic Boating Certification Course

MANCHESTER, Conn. – April 15 –Manchester Community College can help launch people into a great fishing season with a Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)-approved course in basic boating from MCC Credit-Free Programs. Two options for completing the DEP certification are offered on the college campus: On Saturday, April 20, Connecticut Basic Boating is offered as a one-day course from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., just in time for the season opener (refer to CRN 11549). This one-day course provides documentation that enables students to apply for the Connecticut Certificate of Personal Water craft, which includes the Safe Boating Certificate.
“After a long winter, people love to get out on the water to fish, boat or tube. Even canoeists and kayakers like to take the boating safety course so they practice safe boating practices while having fun,” Ann Bonney, MCC’s Director of Credit-Free Programs, said.
Upon completion, students can mail or deliver their completed-course documentation to any state DEP office with the $50 license fee, complete an application for certificate and obtain their personal watercraft/safe boating certificate. Note that the state of Connecticut fee is over and above the course fee.
There is still time to register. Students call the Credit Free Phone-in Registration line at (860) 512-3232 or visit the college registrar’s office before the start of the course. MCC’s fee for the one-day course is $85.
As an option, MCC Credit-Free Programs also offers a four-session version of the course that starts May 13 and runs two Mondays and two Wednesdays, through May 22, from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The four-session course, taught by DEP volunteers, provides the same documentation needed to apply for state certification. The fee for this option is $20 (refer to CRN 11547).
